BACKGROUND

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity, respect, and recognition for domestic workers in the United States. NDWA was founded in 2007 by organizers and worker leaders in six cities representing nannies, house cleaners, and care workers, and now represents an alliance of more than 76 organizations across 22 states and 395,000 domestic workers nationally.

We envision a society where domestic work is valued as essential to our collective well-being, domestic workers are leaders in shaping the care sector, and domestic work jobs are good, economically secure jobs.

For over 15 years, we’ve worked to advance our mission by making domestic work visible. We’ve worked to pass policies that enable rights and higher wages for domestic workers across the country, changed public awareness and opinion about the dignity and value of care work, and built the capacity and leadership of domestic workers to organize and advocate for their rights.

Care in Action is a (501c4) nonprofit, nonpartisan group dedicated to fighting for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States, most of whom are women. Founded in 2016, Care in Action is backed by tens of thousands of nannies, house cleaners, and care workers across the country. We provide the tools, training, and community working families need to make their voices heard, and organize and advocate for respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections.

POSITION SUMMARY

NDWA is seeking a strong, fast, and nimble writer, and storytelling expert with a strong communications and press background to manage our storytelling program and support with earned media needs. The Press & Storytelling Manager will collaborate closely with teams across NDWA and our 501(c)(4) sister organization, Care in Action, to identify spokespeople to bring into our storytelling program. They will manage spokesperson development and storytelling cohorts, organize storytelling trainings, field spokesperson requests, and prepare spokespeople for speaking engagements. The Press & Storytelling Manager will also support the Media Relations Director by creating and managing press materials, fielding press requests, and occasionally pitching to reporters. This work will aid NDWA and Care in Action in shifting the national conversation around care and domestic work by uplifting domestic worker voices and stories traditionally excluded from media.

This role reports to the Senior Communications Director and is fully remote with ability to travel 40% of the time.

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. Storytelling Program Management (50% of FTE)

  • Own the process and system of NDWA and Care in Action’s storytelling program, including but not limited to:

    • Managing storytelling database

    • Scheduling trainings and cohort gatherings

    • Managing logistics for spokespeople

  • Own the fielding of storytelling and press requests through proper channels, including initial contact

  • Assisting with preparing speakers for various speaking engagements

  • Write remarks for spokespeople based on messaging and narrative set by Senior and Deputy Communications Directors

II. Press & Earned Media Support (45% of FTE)

  • Create and manage press materials, including media lists, press kits, and more

  • Manage NDWA and Care in Action’s press inbox

  • Work with the Media Relations Director and consultants on fresh media pitches

  • Draft press statements and op-ed’s as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

III. NDWA Responsibilities (5% of FTE)

  • Participate in staff meetings, staff study and retreats.

  • Complete work plans and reports in a timely manner.

  • Develop and satisfy a Professional Development Plan.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-5 years of communications experience at national level preferred, no management experience needed.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills.

  • A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with members of the media.

  • Ability to work under high pressure and short deadlines.

  • Ability to organize time, manage up, work independently, as well as collaborate, coordinate, and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • A demonstrated commitment to immigration reform, racial justice, gender equity and worker rights.

  • Understanding of issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and other communities of color and demonstrated commitment to racial, economic and gender justice, especially for women of color.

  • Experience working with impacted community members from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

  • Bilingual in Spanish/English is a plus.

  • Ability to travel 40% of the time.
